Michael Kipness 'The Wizard'

Ever since I was a little kid back in the mid 60's, every Saturday my dad would take me, my brother and a bunch of his cronies to either Aqueduct, Belmont or Saratoga. I loved Handicapping the races and was enamored by the colorful characters that circulated around the racetrack. After the day's races, I would pick up the popular tip sheets-Clocker Lawton, NY Handicap and Jacks Green Card to see how they did. It wasn't too difficult to find these sheets littered amongst the many losing tickets on the grandstand floor. I only imagined how much money these tipsters made for just giving the names of horses in the order they liked them with a couple word comments like 'Working Well', "Hot Trainer", "Spotted for the Win". Many were the betting favorites. After analyzing their work for several years, I began to imagine what it would be like if there was a selection sheet that picked a lot of winners, including longshots, and provided well written analysis on why you liked that particular horse. In 1986 I began my lifelong dream of creating such a product. I called my selection sheet The Wizard!

My process in the beginning was to handicap the next day's card, type the sheet, print copies on my kitchen table, then drive around New York City in the wee hours of the morning to distribute it to newsstands close to the Off-Track Betting Parlors.

Times have changed; technology has advanced. Race cards are available 48-72 hours in advance. Through the internet, my products are available worldwide. But one thing has not changed; the Wizard continues to set the standard for handicapping selections and wagering guides.

The Wizard has expanded the business over the years. I am able to include more tracks and new products. I have also focused on fan education, which I believe will not only help the casual horse racing fan and the experienced bettor, but also help the game by expanding the fan base.

The Wizard has created products which address wagering strategies and ticket construction. I include more difficult strategies like exactas, trifectas, dime superfectas, and the wide array of multi-race wagers such as Pick 3's, 4's 5's and the occasional Pick 6 play. Every product is intended to help readers not only have their best chance to make a profit that day, but to become better handicappers and players on their own, so they are successful over time.

The Wagering Strategies product, for example, provides suggested wagers for each race, and is updated after late scratches, 30-60 minutes before first post. Players not only receive my wagers for each race, but how I adjust those strategies based on the latest information, which includes scratches, weather and track conditions.

Thank you sincerely for your interest in "The Wizard".

Feel free to email me at: wizard.drf@gmail.com about anything related to thoroughbred racing, and I will respond to all inquiries as soon as possible

BETTING WINDOW GLOSSARY
BETTING UNITS
BETTING WINDOW wagers suggested in UNITS. Each bettor should establish his/her own level of comfort. The Wizard recommends establishing a single minimum betting UNIT ($2, $5, $10, $15, $20, etc.) for everyday wagering. The stronger the opinion, the more UNITS may be wagered.
STRENGTH OF OPINION AND CONVICTION ON EACH WAGER
PASS - NO WAGER (no diamonds)
This is a race in which I have no opinion.
ACTION - AVERAGE OPINION (one diamond - *)
I have an opinion on the outcome of the race, but for various reasons, suggest a small play.
MORE SERIOUS OPINION (two diamonds - **)
I have confidence in the horses I am giving out and the wagers suggested.
CRYSTAL BALL BEST BET - STRONG OPINION - (three diamonds - ***)
My conviction is a very strong one. I will be focusing on my top selection, which I deem one of my Best Bets on the entire card. I will usually suggest a variety of wagers.
DIAMOND SECPTER - (four diamonds - ****)
The Diamond Scepter is a rare play which I deem a “great betting opportunity”. I never know when a situation might arise. Includes most, if not all, of my strongest handicapping angles.
ADDITIONAL BETTING WINDOW POINTS
Above each race number is the expected post time. Post times can vary from race to race, but usually they are very close to the times noted.

To the right of the race number is a track diagram illustrating the distance, the start and finish. If the track diagram is GREEN, the race is scheduled to be run on grass.

Underneath track diagram are program numbers which correspond to my selections, in order of preference. Program numbers in RED are “OFF-THE-TURF” selections, in order of preference.
WAGERS
This is the most important feature and benefit of the Betting Window. Every race has a section titled wagers and race notes. The first section carefully lays out all the different types of wagers I’m suggesting for that race. Bets might include win, exactas, trifectas, doubles, pick 3’s and pick 4’s. Amounts I sometimes suggest are calculated according to the minimal bet offered by that track.
UPDATE
You will know that I have updated the sheet by seeing the word UPDATED in red to the right of the date of that card

> NOTE: Any wagers I suggest that are affected by late scratches will be updated approximately one hour before first post. This holds true for any race on that card. Selections may be adjusted as well. You will receive these updates to your email inbox.
RACE NOTES
Right underneath the wagers are the race notes. This section presents any aspect of that race I feel is most important for you to know. The race notes could explain how I envision the race is going to be run, why my top selection and horses I’m including should benefit by the pace scenario, or other factors playing into their favor. If it’s a Crystal Ball Best Bet, my race notes will focus mostly on that horse.

> NOTE: If there’s a late scratch that changes the way I feel how the race will be run or my Best Bet is scratched, the race note section will be updated.
RACE CONDITIONS AND TYPES OF WAGERS OFFERED
To the right of the wagers and race notes is the distance of the race, the type of race it is (such as a claiming race, allowance, stakes, maiden special weight, maiden claimer and the purse, how much the race is worth), the different types of bets you can make on that race and the minimum amount of money that type of wager will cost per individual bet. I will always refer to the wagering menu for that day to plot out my bets and the cost. For instance, if the menu states that the track tote system will allow you to make a $0.50 cent trifecta, If I suggest a trifecta such as this one: 1 over 3-6-8 over ALL (8 horse field) the total cost of the play would be $9.00 for a fifty cent wager or $18 for a $1 wager. It’s not that important for you to understand the actual calculations of this ticket since I provide that to you, but it’s important for me to know what the minimum amount is that the tote system will allow for that bet.
PLACE PARLAY PLAY OF THE DAY
At the bottom of every Betting Window for that track and day, I will be featuring a brand-new wager that you will have to manually make yourself. Every betting site will take this wager as well. You can also make this type of bet if you go to the track and want to use their tote machine or bet at a window with a real teller. This fun wager is a low-risk high-reward play that keeps you engaged throughout the day. The bet is called Place Parlay Play of the Day, which means every bet you make in the sequence will be a horse who must run first or second. Each place parlay will include four horses from 4 different races on that card that the Wizard determines to be the best four I want to group together to have the greatest chance of hitting all 4 resulting in a very good payoff. For example, the sequence starts with Race 2 and includes Races 4,7 and 9. Start the play in Race 2 with a single UNIT initial bet (example $10.00) to place on the first horse of the sequence. If our horse runs first or second, you take whatever winnings you receive and bet it all on race 4, the second-place bet of the sequence. If you win again, you make the same wager in race 7, putting all the money you got back on this third race of the sequence. If that horse runs first or second, you are alive for a nice payoff should the horse in race 9, the last race of the sequence, also run first or second. The worst that can happen is you lose your initial investment, which in this example is a single UNIT ($10.00). This is an example of what the place parlay is. The horses and race numbers obviously change for every race card.
